Finding the right trees

Look for two healthy, living trees at least 20–25 cm in diameter — roughly the width of your forearm. Avoid dead trees, saplings, or trees with loose bark. The ideal distance between anchor points is 4 to 5 metres, though most hammocks can accommodate 3–6 metres with adjustable suspension.

Getting the hang angle right

Aim for a 30-degree hang angle from horizontal — this is the sweet spot between comfort and structural safety. Too flat and you'll feel like a banana; too steep and the hammock becomes uncomfortably tight. A gentle sag in the middle is exactly what you want.

Ridgeline height

Attach your suspension points at roughly 1.5 to 1.8 metres above the ground. This gives you a comfortable seated height once the hammock sags to its natural hang position.

Essential accessories for camping

• Tree Straps — Always use wide tree straps (at least 2.5 cm wide) rather than thin rope or cord. Wide straps distribute load across the bark and protect the tree from damage. Most national parks and campgrounds require tree-friendly straps.
• Carabiners & Swivels — Rated carabiners make connecting your hammock to tree straps fast, secure, and adjustable. Look for carabiners rated to at least 5 kN for camping use.

Weight Limits & Load Ratings

Every camping hammock has a maximum weight capacity — always check the product page before purchasing. As a general guide:

• Single camping hammocks — typically rated to 100–150 kg
• Double camping hammocks — typically rated to 150–200 kg
• Heavy-duty options — available for users requiring higher weight ratings

Always factor in the weight of any gear stored in the hammock, not just body weight. Ensure your tree straps and carabiners are rated equal to or higher than the hammock's maximum load.
