⚠️ Safety Requirements – Please Read Before You Buy
A flying fox is a lot of fun, and it needs to be set up and used the right way. Please make sure your backyard and riders meet these requirements, which are based on the manufacturer's manual.
Who Can Ride
- Ages 8 and over only. Not recommended for children under 8.
- One rider at a time, with a maximum rider weight of 113kg.
- Adult supervision is required at all times.
- Designed for family home use only. It is not for schools, childcare centres or play centres.
Where You Can Install It
- You need two live, healthy trees at least 31cm in diameter (about 92cm around the trunk), less than 29m apart.
- Do not fix the cable to posts, buildings or anything other than healthy trees unless a qualified engineer has checked them. Ask an arborist if you're unsure about a tree.
- Run the line over soft grass, clear of bushes, rocks and anything a rider could hit. If the ground packs down hard over time, move the line to softer ground.
- Use a stable launch platform that doesn't rock and lets the shortest rider reach the trolley (not included).
Setting Up & Testing
- An adult must install and test the flying fox before anyone rides.
- Load-test the cable and fixings by hanging 113kg from the trolley, and run a weight down the line to check the brake. Repeat the load test regularly, not just at setup.
- Retighten the cable clamps after the first ride, again after 30 minutes of use, and regularly after that.
- The kit contains small parts. Keep children under 3 away during assembly.
Every Time You Ride
- Check the trolley, cable, rope, knot, clamps and trees for wear, fraying or anything loose. Replace worn parts with genuine Lifespan parts only.
- Keep everyone else at least 7.62m away from the line while it's in use.
- Don't ride when it's wet, windy or raining.
- Wear closed shoes and close-fitting clothes. No scarves, loose clothing or jewellery, and tie back long hair.
- Do not wear a helmet, because it can tangle in the rope.
- Adjust the seat rope so the rider's head sits well below the trolley.
- Hold the trolley handles tightly, and wait until you've come to a complete stop before letting go or getting off.

Got two big gum trees and a stretch of lawn between them? That's the start of something kids will remember for years. This backyard flying fox kit gives them the rush of zipping along a 29m steel cable, either hanging onto the handlebar or sitting on the disc seat. It's the kind of backyard fun that turns weekends into whole afternoons outside.
Why You'll Love It
- ✅ Two Ways to Ride: Hold the trolley handles for a classic flying fox ride, or sit on the removable disc seat.
- ✅ Smooth Run, Gentle Stop: Sealed ball bearing pulleys keep the trolley rolling smoothly, and a stainless steel spring brake slows it at the end.
- ✅ A Long, Thrilling Course: The 29m galvanised steel cable suits trees up to just under 29m apart, backed by a 12-month parts warranty.
Planning Your Course
A flying fox works because the start sits higher than the finish, so the trolley rolls downhill along the cable. The manual uses a simple way to work out your heights on level ground:
- Finish height: your tallest rider's height plus at least 61cm. For a 1.5m rider, that's about 2.1m.
- Drop: your course length multiplied by 8%. A 20m course needs a 1.6m drop, and a 27m course needs about 2.2m.
- Start height: the finish height plus the drop. For a 1.5m rider on a 20m course, that's about 3.7m.
The cable sags a little under the rider, so the ride naturally slows from about two thirds of the way along. The spring brake then brings the trolley to a stop before it reaches the finish clamps. If the trolley reaches the clamps, lower the start slightly or raise the finish slightly.
What You'll Need for Setup
The main cable wraps around the finish tree and is held with three U clamps. At the start tree, a sling cable and turnbuckle let you tension the line. Alongside the kit, you'll need an adjustable spanner, pliers, a stable launch platform, a 113kg load for testing, and a couple of helpers with brooms or poles to hold the cable up while you take out the slack. Care & Maintenance
Regular Maintenance: Follow the maintenance steps in the manual, including checking and retightening the clamps, repeating the 113kg load test, and treating any rust spots early.
Coastal Homes: Steel parts can rust over time, especially near the sea. Check them more often if you live close to the coast.
Cold Weather: Bring the rope and seat inside when temperatures drop below 0°C.

Common Questions
How far apart do my trees need to be?
Less than 29m. The main cable is 29m long and wraps around the finish tree, so thicker trees use up a little more cable. The manual's example course is 27m long.
Can I use posts instead of trees?
Only if a qualified engineer has checked them first. The cable puts a strong sideways load on its anchor points, so the manufacturer says to attach it only to live, healthy trees unless an engineer approves another option. No posts are included.
How does the flying fox stop?
A stainless steel spring brake on the cable slows the trolley before it reaches the finish clamps. The cable also sags under the rider, so the ride slows naturally towards the end. Always test the brake with a weight before anyone rides.
Why shouldn't my child wear a helmet?
The manufacturer advises against helmets on this flying fox because a helmet can get tangled in the rope. Close-fitting clothes, closed shoes and tied-back hair are recommended instead.
What does the warranty cover?
Parts are covered for 12 months when the kit is used in a family home and maintained as the manual describes. The warranty doesn't cover normal wear and tear, or use in schools, childcare centres or play centres. It also doesn't cover rust, unless a manufacturing fault caused it, and never covers rust on kits within 1.5km of salt water.
