Our Hammock Swing guide is a perfect starting point to familiarize yourself with different styles of hammocks and their various features. As you read through this guide, consider how you want to use your hammock. Take into account how many people will use the hammock at a time, as there are single, double, and even jumbo size hammocks available with weight capacity varying from 100 to 500 kgs. So, select the style of hammock that catches your eye and let’s delve deeper into their features and benefits.

Two Basic Styles of Hammocks

Most styles of hammocks we see are derived from two basic types. The original Brazilian hammock swing, dating back over 1000 years, uses a 2-point hanging system, known as in-line, which envelopes you in a cocoon-like pod and conforms to your body weight and shape. This style is also referred to as a Tropical or Jungle hammock.

The other common style is the spreader hammock, a redesign developed much later in history, also known as the North American Hammock or Spreader Bar Hammock. The spreader bar with its pre-drilled holes allows the cords to be threaded through the bar, opening the hammock in a lay-on-top style. This system was developed by pioneering Americans for easier dismounting.

Modern Styles of Hammocks

Now, let's look at the different hammock styles available today.

Brazilian Hammock

Brazilian Hammocks are known for their robustness and comfort, making them a good choice for colder climates as their thicker weave blocks cold air, creating added warmth. Brazilian hammocks usually lack spreader-bars, and are therefore designed with an in-line hanging system. However, there are Brazilian designs incorporating spreader-bars which also incorporate the traditional thick cotton weave. The bold, vibrant colours associated with Brazil are also a common feature of these hammocks, along with their trademark 100% cotton fabric, constructed in a tight and durable weave. Brazilian craftsmen are also known for their beautiful fringe embellishments adding to the design and feel of the hammock.

However, being made of natural cotton can create problems from exposure to outside elements and can lead to mould and mildew issues if proper cleaning and protection are not carried out. For those considering a full-time sleeping option instead of a conventional bed, the Brazilian hammock is a good choice and an ideal space-saving solution.

Resort Style Hammock Swing

Resort Style Hammocks feature rope stitching design between spreader-bars. These are the classic hammocks that most people associate with lounging under palm trees. Spreader bars keep the lounge bed open for easy dismount, and the rope stitching offers both support and flexibility. The open, airy hammock patterns offer excellent airflow. However, the rope can create waffle-like pressure points on the user’s skin. Ideal for snatching that moment of relaxation and reflection at the end of a busy day.

Though very popular for outdoor relaxation, tie-on tree straps can be added for extra comfort. These styles of hammocks are not generally used for nightly sleeping, and caution should be taken when getting on due to the instability of balance from the spreader-bar design, increasing the possibility of flipping over.

Cotton Rope Hammock Swing

Cotton Rope Hammock swings are usually either cotton or polyester, and each material has its advantages. Cotton hammocks are more flexible than polyester, but polyester is less susceptible to mould.

Considering the environment in which you will be using this style of hammock, treated fabrics are popular. Hammock stands with a waterproof coating, able to withstand splashing from poolside and salt water spray from the sea, are also available. Keep in mind, treated polyester fabric may last longer than cotton and require less maintenance but will not be as soft as 100% cotton.

Wild Camping, Backpacking, Hiking, Jungle, and Camping Hammocks

Camping, backpacking, hiking, and exploring the great outdoors are not new or revolutionary. However, using a hammock-style tent that provides you with all the conventional features of a tent, and much more, is. The ultra-light travel hammock now offers insect protection with added treated mosquito nets, walls, roof, and can accommodate up to twelve people. Suspended above the ground, it offers great views of the wild surroundings, animals above and below. No need to look for the perfect pitch, just two trees are what’s needed. Made from strong nylon, these unique tent-like hammocks are robust and ultra-portable.

The ultra-lightweight, compact, and easy-to-carry travel hammock can also be used with a tarp which hangs overhead and protects you against the rain. For colder conditions, special quilts or pads can be fitted beneath you for warmth. Both are quick and easy to set up. Straps (not ropes) are used to loop around trees to create attachment points. Two sturdy trees approximately 4-6 meters apart are ideal for setting up your sleeping area. This offers comfortable sleeping off the ground with the added advantage of protection from bugs and insects.

Double Hammock: The Fun Way To Enjoy Camping

Double Hammock: The Fun Way To Enjoy Camping

Everybody Loves a Double Hammock

As children, we were all fond of hammocks, despite the mild challenge of figuring out how to climb into them. Fast forward to today, and hammocks have been redefined as a versatile alternative to conventional tent shelters for outdoor adventures, particularly in Western cultures. Let’s delve into the top 5 reasons you might want to swap your tent for a comfortable cocoon between the trees:

A Better Sleep

Multiple studies have demonstrated that the gentle rocking motion of a double hammock not only lulls individuals to sleep faster but also results in deeper, more restful slumber. Researchers at the University of Geneva found that adults sleeping on a rocking bed experienced an increase in sleep spindles, brainwaves believed to soothe sleepers in noisier environments.

Lighter Equipment

What sets hammocks apart from tents? No poles! The absence of poles makes even the most robust, weather-resistant hammocks lighter than comparable tents. Most high-quality double hammocks weigh less than 1 lb.!

Good For Your Body

Initially, sleeping on your back in a hammock might seem uncomfortable, but those who've transitioned from tent to hammock camping report significant improvements in both comfort and health. Elevated feet can reduce swelling, and the hammock’s gentle curvature can subtly stretch your back muscles, enhancing your overall wellbeing. The slight elevation of the upper body also promotes optimal brain circulation and facilitates efficient airflow while sleeping.

Finding The Perfect Campsite

Your only real limitation to a hammock is finding two trees, and on the west coast, we don’t see this being a huge issue any time soon. There is no more worrying about uneven ground or rocks and roots digging into your back all night that you didn’t notice before.

Just for Fun

Just as we loved hammocks as children, nothing says ‘summer is here’ like stringing a hammock up in the park or even on your lunch break and hanging out for a while.

Even if you still love camping in a tent you have to admit, swinging slowly back and forth under a canopy of trees on a warm summer afternoon is something that can bring a smile to all of our faces – especially if it is a double hammock and shared with a special someone.

TYPES OF DOUBLE HAMMOCKS YOU CAN ENJOY WHILE CAMPING

Hammocks have advanced to new degrees of comfort, allowing you to sleep comfortably in the great outdoors and wake up refreshed. With so many hammocks to choose from, it's easy to become overwhelmed and confused.

Gathered-End Hammock

The material is bunched at each end of these traditional hammocks. They're often inexpensive and wonderful for lounging, but a double hammock in this form won't give you a good night's sleep because there's not much room for maneuvering, and you risk being engulfed by the hammock's sides.

Asymmetrical Hammock

The asymmetrical shape lets you lay diagonally and gives you additional space at the head and feet.

Spreader Bar Hammock

The wooden spreader bar at either end allows for different head and foot space and a flatter laying position.

90-Degree Hammock

The suspension runs along the side of the hammock so that you may lay horizontally. However, it requires a stand to set up, and getting in and out can be difficult.

Hammock Chair

Hammock chairs are a nice and soothing spot to hang out, but it's not the best place to sleep!

3-point Anchor Camping Hammock

The 3-point anchor mechanism offers a taut, flat hammock floor that supports your entire body.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Is a double hammock comfortable?

If you set up everything correctly, it will be simple to pass the time or sleep through the night. Some double hammocks include two independent sleeping bays, each supported by an anti-roll mechanism to prevent rolling into the middle and a taut construction that supports your entire body. If you're camping in a cooler region, an inflatable mattress will keep the cool air out of the hammock's bottom.

Can two people sleep in a single hammock?

It's not a good idea! All hammocks have a load capacity, and two people should never climb into a single hammock, especially while hung because it might be dangerous if it collapses!

Is there a way to stay dry in a double hammock?

You can hang a tarp, mosquito netting, bags, and other items you want to keep off the ground from a ridgeline that runs over the top of your hammock between anchor points.

How do I hang a double hammock while camping?

Depending on the hammock, you may receive additional equipment such as carabiners and tree straps as part of the package. If you desire a gathered end or an asymmetrical hammock, hang it with a 1-foot sag in the middle. Always keep in mind your position since depending on which hammock you choose, you'll need two or three trees, but you can also get creative and use a post, fence, or car as an anchor point, or even a hammock stand.
